Greetings! Welcome to the new LRS newsletter. We will begin sending this on a quarterly basis to keep you apprised of LRS happenings and trends. We welcome any and all feedback and will post newsworthy items you may have.

In this issue, we've tried to catch you up on what it is we've been doing this year, from our grassroots outreach to our new staff members. We hope you enjoy.

Announcements

The LRS Board of Trustees has announced that the membership year will now begin on July 1 instead of January 1. This means you will not need to renew your membership during the busy holiday season. We will send a reminder to hold on to your member dues until May/June 2010, at which time we will invoice.

LRS in the Community

At the request of our panel members, we use much of the funding received from percentage fees on radio and television advertising to help build our brand and build awareness. What you probably don't know is that we also have a grass roots outreach component to our advertising plan that has been in place for several years.

These are some of the activities in which we've participated:
-People's Law School in February and September
-LegalLine, every first Tuesday of the month in the LRS office
-City of Austin Small Business Development Getting Connected
-Family Eldercare's Fan Drive (entire staff volunteered)
-Presentations at area retirement centers and other locations
-Back to School Bash at the Delco Center
-Everest College Community Resource Fair, just to name a few.

We also used paid advertisements to sponsor community events:
  -Museum Day
  -LiveStrong Challenge
  -March of Dimes Walk
  -Blues on the Green
  -KVET Music Series, and more

LRS also participated in the City of Austin Summer Youth Interns Program. Mariah and Jasmine, our summer interns, each spent four weeks helping in the LRS office.

LRS Staff

I would like to reintroduce our fabulous LRS staff:

Leslie Ornelas, executive assistant, has been with us for almost four years. She assists with our grass roots outreach efforts and coordinates volunteers for LegaLRS officelLine and speakers for People's Law School.

Annie Herrera, intake counselor, came to us in November 2007. She is the voice you hear when we have questions about status reports. Annie processes those reports and helps with accounting.

Martin Crane works for us part time and has been with us almost 2 years. Martin helps process referrals received via our Internet based referral system, helps with our web page and with this newsletter.

The newest member of our team is Joy Rivera. She has a human resources background and will begin assisting with those matters.

I have been here over 10 years and have enjoyed every minute. Have you ever had a dream job? This is mine. I enjoy assisting the public, helping our lawyers build their client base, and holding LRS to the highest standards by providing excellent customer service to both the public and our panel members. We are proud to brag that this LRS is highly regarded across the country. For several years I have been a part of the American Bar Association's Program of Assistance and Review (PAR) team that consults with bar association referral services across the country to teach best practices for quality referral service programs. I also have been teaching a "Nuts and Bolts" class for the past several years at the LRS National Workshop
For Attorneys...

Logo Remember to contact LRS when you are unavailable to assist LRS callers (vacation, seminars, or just too busy!). You may always put your referrals on "hold" temporarily if you know you will be out of the office.

You are prohibited from referring LRS callers to other lawyers. We lose the ability to track our referrals if those referrals disappear. If you have questions about our policies, please take a look at the rules posted on our webpage www.AustinLRS.org.

While you are at the web site, take a look at the extensive statistical information compiled from information gathered during the referral process and from your status reports. We hope you find it interesting and helpful.

Lastly, we have seen quite a jump in panel membership during this down economic time. That means, since our referrals have remained somewhat steady, the referrals are being spread more broadly. We will continue our efforts to increase the referral volume.
LRS is a non profit public service that has been serving Central Texans since 1966.

We are extremely proud of this LRS. Thank you for your support and excellent service to the people who count on us to assist with their legal needs.
