General Descriptions of the Major Types of Law
Administrative Law:
Includes cases in which caller is having difficulty with a federal, state, or
municipal agency (i.e., social security administration, administrative agencies,
licensing agencies, regulatory agencies)
Bankruptcy Law:
The rights of creditors and debtors in proceedings under the Bankruptcy Code,
and in state law insolvency proceedings. Is it personal or business bankruptcy?
Business Law:
The rights of parties engaged in business and commercial transactions, contracts,
securities, and business disputes.
Civil Appellate:
Appeals of final decisions of civil county and district courts (not criminal courts).
Civil Rights:
The rights of individuals, businesses, and governments under the Federal and state
constitutions, including civil rights and discrimination law.
Consumer Law:
The rights of individuals as consumers or purchasers of goods and services and problems
that may arise after the purchase such as defective products, dangerous products,
credit card problems, auto repair problems, other debt, identity theft.
Criminal Law:
The defense of parties accused of crimes, and victims' rights. This category also
includes criminal trials and appeals, juveniles.
Employment/Labor:
The law governing the relations between employers and employees including contracts,
claims arising out of hiring and firing, work related claims, and benefit plans.
Entertainment Law:
Work with the entertainment industry contracts, copyright and trademark issues,
publishing, music.
Family Law:
The law concerning pre-marriage planning, and issues arising out of divorce, custody,
adoption, child support, common law marriages, and collaborative resolutions.
Immigration:
The law concerning applications for citizenship, visas, and matters such as political
asylum.
Insurance Law:
The law concerning the interpretation and enforcement of insurance policies including
insurance bad faith and coverage claims. Includes health, home, and auto.
Intellectual Property:
The law concerning the creation and protection of intellectual property rights,
such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks, for technology and entertainment.
Mediation:
A process of assisted negotiations. Enables parties to present their case to a mutually
selected neutral person before money is spent on litigation.

We currently do not have lawyers who practice in the military benefits area. Several

Oil & Gas:
Assistance with all aspects of development, from land acquisition to joint venture
agreements, financing, permitting and environmental compliance.
Personal Injury:
The pursuit and defense of claims resulting from accidents and industrial causes
including claims for personal injury, or death, related property claims, and claims
against professionals like attorneys or physicians, for failing to provide proper
care.
Real Estate:
The law concerning all aspects of real estate including the sale, rental, and development
of property, secured claims and liens and government condemnation.
Taxation:
The law concerning the tax obligations of individuals and businesses, tax planning,
audits, and litigation in tax court.
Wills & Estates Planning:
The law of wills and trusts, probate, estate planning, asset protection, and charitable
giving.
